There are many different magical traditions active today, offering several perspectives on what magic is and how it operates. During the Late Modern Period (19th and 20th centuries) the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Neo-Pagan religions like Wicca and Asatru presented coherent paradigms to serve a magical worldview.
In the post-modern era (latter part of the 20th century) the in-depth research and the rigorous revival of source texts by Dr. Stephen Skinner and Joseph Peterson, along with - I hate to admit it but - the body of literature known as Chaos Magic added to the contemporary archives of magical treatise and doctrine.
In the present metamodern era new authors and websites are emerging to carry the torch and refine our understanding of magic. I hope to make some small contribution to this worthy cause.
It should be noted, however, the aforementioned were able to make their mark on the page of time and help build the magical subculture of today because of the efficacy and durability of what our ancestors learned and taught.
The magical lore of the ages refers to a resilient set of magical axioms that have survived from before the dawn of recorded history to the present day. Across millennia these core fundamentals have appeared through myriad cultures with startling similarity.
Cave paintings, burial sites, and artifacts from the Old Stone Age reveal the same foundational beliefs recorded by the priests of Sumer and Egypt. From the Greek Magical Papyri (2nd to 5th century BCE), Corpus Hermeticum (1st to 3rd centuries CE), and the philosopher Iamblichus (245 to 325 CE) to the Picatrix (10th century Islamic Spain), Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1531), and the grimoires of the High Middle Ages (13th to 17th century) we find much the same set of ideas expressed in different language and through slightly varying methods.
We can take these and many other historical accounts and artifacts along with the scant information we have regarding the practices of the Celtic Druids and Persian Magi to form a reasonably coherent consensus of how magic is believed to operate in our universe and the magician's role in these metaphysical mechanics.
NOTE: The structure of the lore presented on this page will be familiar to some as resonating with Kabbalistic, Hermetic, Neoplatonic principles and hierarchies. I don't know why some percentage of people freak out about that, but I want to say it's just a paradigm, a tool I am using to conceive.
There are others ways as well and I may publish a more horizontal schema at some point to compliment this content.
Note I stated the lore provides "a reasonably coherent consensus of how magic is believed to operate", and thereafter said "the tabs below provide a comprehensive framework".
A framework, or conceptual model is all I can give you because that is all I have ever been given. It's the best we can truly hope for at humanity's current, collective level of understanding the universe. As of 2026 magic as a causal force we participate in is an unscientific subject matter.
This means simply that we cannot conclusively and definitively identify a mechanism that drives the process or its outcomes. We can't lift the hood and point to any "astral conduit" or "elemental sequences".
None of this can be demonstrated the way a chemical reaction or mechanical process can be articulated and walked through. It is a conceptual model to help us visualize and immerse ourselves within magical work, both during operational magic and in periods of contemplation which strengthen our bond to the model.
I would love to know, just as much as you or anyone else what is really going on when I unleash magical forces to enact work on my behalf. Perhaps someday we will know this the same way we can presently know why it rains.
For now what matters is this: Regardless of whether or not the astral plane, elemental qualities, and the great magical agent are real or not, true or false, objective or imagined - reality behaves as if all of these things, when considered and applied per the existing lore of magic, are indeed true.
In other words, this model produces efficacious - reliable and repeatable - results! That is the only thing that truly matters; at the very least, if not the only thing it is surely the most important point.

Magic is an unscientific discipline. I sleep just fine with that because it is also a reliable, predictable, repeatable process.

The lore of the ages teaches a framework of multiple planes of reality on which all things have multidimensional being.
Both the Universe and the human structure reflect the five planes or states of existence. Our energy body system provides a "body" or vehicle for each of the planes. Our energy bodies are also the components of the complete human aura; each subtle body forms an auric layer and contributes to the aura's functions.

The accordion tabs below will walk you through the process of magic as an activated force moving through reality. The explanation relies on the Five Planes Paradigm and the Anatomy of the Subtle Bodies. In other words this model of Integrated Energy Matrices or Macrocosmic and Microcosmic coherence attempts to diagram, per established mystical and magical lore and metaphysical philosophy, the interactions between the magician's energy bodies or aura and the planes of reality beyond this physical realm.
The five planes of reality or five worlds, five realms of existence, and so on are often discussed or illustrated as a layered strata of worlds stacked atop each other. This is simply an illustrative or conceptual device. The paradigm is explicit in stating these various realms all exist here and now, though not all are subject to our material time and the four non-physical planes are unavailable to our physical senses.
Because each plane is interacted with by an energy body of the same substance that is part of the human energy matrix and because we can, in our material body and mind, experience these other realms through altered consciousness it is just as correct to consider them as states of being.

The Astral Light, the Great Magical Agent, the subtle field of intelligence and energy contacted by magicians to do their work on multiple planes of reality.
From the One, the Monadic Plane, Source, the Divine, et al emanates the realm of purse spirit. Impossible to truly know at an intellectual level, this space or state can be experienced through gnosis, insight, and inspiration.
The causal body is the energy body associated with this plane, so-called because it is the first cause of your manifest being. Spirit body is another name for this energetic expression. The spark of every genesis, creative impulse, or idea comes from this plane, and here too magical work begins before the magician is even aware of the idea.
This is the unseen flash which we receive but do not consciously cause. Perhaps our spirit body generates the inspiration or more likely receives it from a higher source.
Inspiration may come when we are idle, even sleeping, or it may come when we are in the midst of doing, perhaps in the very work the inspiration seeks to be carried through.
A still mind, well conditioned and ready, feels the inspiration and carries it into an idea. The more refined the magician's subtle anatomy the more easily she or he will recognize and sense inspiration.
Chassidic Teaching "A new idea is a spark from the supernal world.”
Hesiod "The Muses breathed into me a divine voice.”
Bruce Lee “The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.”
Wayne Dyer "Everything that’s created comes out of silence.”
Magical creation is the flash of insight we call an idea and the subsequent process of clarification and idealizing the success of that idea. On the mental plane, the state of pure mind and ideation our inspiration is given life and we can see it.
Our mental body does its subtle, unseen work to bring the idea down from the spirit body and into our waking consciousness. The creation is initially unconscious from our perspective in the flesh, but it becomes a collaborative effort upon entering our field of awareness.
The living creation grows brighter, more vivid and lifelike through visualization, intent, determination, until it is substantive enough to hold form.
Alchemical Axiom "The work begins in the subtle."
As Plato said "The world of ideas is the only reality."
Plotinus added much later “The One overflows, and the Intellect is its first emanation.”
Giordano Bruno "The divine is in the idea, not the form.”
Zohar "The thought of the Creator is the soul of all worlds.”
On the astral plane our creation is given its form. This is the plane of dreams, desire, emotions, divided into the upper/solar and lower/lunar astral this is the realm of the soul (solar) and shadow (lunar).
It is said all that has happened, is happening, and will happen has its likeness on the abstract astral plane. This doesn't meant the future is held in perfect definition on this plane or, rather, in this state, but its potential forms may lie hereupon.
When the astral body receives the work from the mental body, it is our conscious work to deploy emotions, sensory immersion, and all manner of magical technique, fortified by our Will, in order to bring into astral form the created idea.
At this stage the Great Magical Agent, known also as the astral light, is engaged with by the magician. This fluid-fabric of the subtle worlds and astral realm is like a sculptor's clay of fine light that is caused to form the image of the magician's desire.
First the solar process aided by the soul, and then the lunar modulation helped by the shadow, form the sublime likeness of our desire or desired outcome. The creation given form needs only to be densified from this point.
Eliphas Levy “The Astral Light is the universal agent, the great magical power. Everything that exists has its roots in the Astral Light. The imagination of the mage acts upon the Astral Light, and the Astral Light acts upon the world.”
Papus (Gérard Encausse) The Astral Light is the intermediary between the visible and the invisible. All forms pre-exist in the Astral Light before they appear in matter.”
The etheric plane is a proto-physical doble of the physical world. Still fine, subtle material it is less abstract and shifting than the astral for here things are on the verge of becoming physical.
The ether is referred to as the subtlest nature of matter or the first density of form. It is more easily experienced via emotive and physical senses because of this proto-physical nature; examples of direct etheric experience include the Ki of aikido, Chi of Tai Chi, the energy ball exercises popular in contemporary mystical practice and similar energy channeling practices that have a physical impact.
If you have ever practiced swinging a baseball bat "through" the ball or felt like you could control a basketball for half a second after it left your hands you have interacted with and felt the etheric principle.
This is the foundation for all material phenomena and the carrier of the vital energy or life force and other animating principles. The etheric body is strongly associated with the Will, and is the medium that allows our minds and bodies to live and move.
The ether is the lower octave of spirit. Whereas the cosmic spirit is the immediate emanation of the Divine, the animating spirit, or ether, i the source and regulator of the four elemental qualities and the substance we have our immediate beings in.
In this state or at this phase your etheric double will utilize the four elemental grades to densify that which was formed on the astral, bringing it to the precipice of manifestation. The work from the material vantage that aids this process includes continued visualization and immersion, the focused will, and the various magical techniques you learn and apply for magical operations.
A specific focus on elemental work, such as the elemental ladder from spirit down through air, fire, water, and earth is a strong base for empowering meditation. This process can be observed in meditation as a regular training exercise and/or applied deliberately near the end of or even throughout as magical operation.
Helena Blavatsky “Ether is the lowest principle of the Akasha, the plastic medium of all forces. It is the first condensation of the Great Agent. The ether is the mother of every form and the vehicle of every life.”
Eliphas Levi "The astral light condenses into the ether, and the ether into matter. Ether is the first density of the astral pattern."
The familiar physical realm is where the densified form in the ether becomes manifest at the appointed time. We visualize and actualize the desire or goal becoming real around us in the moment, and perhaps it does. Perhaps also it comes later. We finish the magic, return to the material consciousness, ground our intentions and move on with life. The subconscious and the energy bodies, along with any participating spirits, will finish our work and fulfil the manifestation from here.
Always remember to ground magical and even mystical work here on the physical plane. That anchor is what finalizes the process to make it real.
