How to Read Each Spell Listing

Each spell or operation is listed in a common format. By understanding this format you can glance at a spell and know what kind of operation it is and what generally is involved before you open it up to view the details. This is useful if, for example, you only want straight incantations to add to your own work and don't want to fuss with the mechanics of an entire operation, or if you are seeking a specific king of magic. Below is the key for each listing.

What The Terms on Each Spell Listing Mean:

Is this a simple incantation - meaning only the words of a spell, or is it an extended operation involving other steps?

The top left corner over each listing will say either simple incantation or extended operation.

You will then see the following terms for each listing:

Branch of Magic: This tells you what overall kind of magic is presented, practical or esoteric, which are the two main branches or use cases for magical work.

Practical Magic - this is problem solving, goal achieving, getting-stuff-done in daily life magic.

Esoteric Magic - this is a more mystical use of magic for training or spiritual pursuits or just because you can. Often called magic for the sake of magic, this kind of work includes astral projection, communing with spirits to lean occult secrets, and so forth.

Spell Category: This tells you what the magic applies to, as in what aspect of life or sphere of concern, i.e. love, traveling, theft, protection, money, deception, etc.

Class of Magic: This defines whether a spell/operation is high magic or low magic. These terms are not related to morality or good vs. evil. Rather, they are an indicator of complexity and even cost involved with the magic.

High Magic- This work may involve significant prerequisite learning and study, specific initiations, complicated procedures, often times uses spiritual hierarchies and formalities, requires special components or objects, may even require certain teaching lineages, and is more technical and labor-intensive. Any of the aforementioned may be enough to qualify an operation as high magic. This work is often but not always ritualistic in nature.

Low Magic - This is folk magic and other magical work that is very accessible, uses common ingredients and materials, requires less technical skill and formality, and costs less in terms of money and labor.

Magical Method: The term listed after this heading will tell you which procedural method of magic is being presented. Each listing will be either natural magic, ritual magic, sorcery/spiritualist, or volitional. Natural and ritual magic are mutually exclusive, a spell is one or the other. The last two are added for certain situations when the operation leans very heavily towards one of those methods, but generally sorcery will be a ritual magic procedure and volitional magic will be akin to natural magic.

Natural Magic - This is magic not framed ritually (some ritual may be used but the overall structure is not within a ritual) and is best explained as using incantations and symbols along with items of correspondence to create a charged field of energy-intention which is then unleashed to attain your objective.

Ritual Magic- Magic in the form of ritual procedures.

Sorcery/Spiritualist - Magic that relies heavily if not exclusively upon named entities who are either not of this world or at least are not physical, biological organisms; this could mean angels, demons, the dead, elementals, celestial spirits, etc.

Volitional Magic - Magic without props and components or perhaps limited to one or two items buy driven almost entirely by the focused will; may or may not include incantation.

Form of Magic: This is the kind of magical application:

  • banishing - riding or clearing energy, presence, entities, etc.
  • binding - confining, obligating, or keeping energy/spirit(s) in place, on or near a person or on a certain task or away from a place, task, person, etc.
  • charging/empowering - usually placing energy within an object and sealing it but also impregnating people and places with specific energy.
  • charm - glamor, beguilement, deception, influencing a person's opinions, moods, attitudes, etc.
  • combative/baneful - vengeance, destruction, damage, "Cursing", putting the hurt on, et al (this often involves one or more other forms within its scope)
  • conjuration - calling energy or entity, raising the same, bringing energy/power down; in general causing energy,. force, or power to occur or appear.
  • consecration/sanctification - setting apart, purifying, clearing energy from, sealing energy within object, space, person.
  • divination - finding information, looking into future or distance, obtaining information, learning secrets.
  • enchantment - placing magical power, charge, influence or tendency on object or space and sometimes person.
  • evocation/summoning - calling or summoning entity or spirit; like conjuration but involves intelligences and usually named entities.
  • invocation/communion - connecting with or bringing into oneself an energy or entity; using the power of a name.
  • mystical - magic used for mystical purposes, such as soul travel or astral projection, spirit communication, energy sensing etc.
  • protection - protecting person, place, thing, time, event; preventing change or affect upon person, place, thing, idea, etc.
  • transmutation - transformation, changing one thing into another.

Magical Technique: The specific techniques and tools used in the operation. The possibilities are extensive, from candle magic, symbol magic, or amulet making to Runes, knot magic, storytelling, wand work, and so on (and on).

Timing: What day of the week, season, time of month or day, etc. is ideal for the work.

Material Components: Any items or "ingredients" you might need.

Correspondences: This lists things like colors, sounds, elements, planets, etc. to allow you to bring additional energy into the work if you like.
